Not much is known about Saint Sebastian, who lived during the days of early Christians in Rome under the Emperor Diocletian. The traditional story of Sebastian holds that he served in the Imperial Guard until it was discovered that he was a Christian, at which point he was ordered to death. Despite being pierced by arrows he survived and was healed. He presented himself to the astonished Diocletian who then ordered him to death by clubbing.

Saint Sebastian became a popular subject for sculptors and painters during the Renaissance period. His feast day is January 20.
